Portrait of Paulus Hofhaimer
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Albrecht Dürer. The drawing shows the portrait of a man looking towards the left. He is wearing a hat and a fur coat. He has long hair and a serious expression. The artist has but in a dark background. Text in the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 25 ALBRECHT DÜRER (b. 1472; d. 1528) PORTRAIT OF PAULUS HOFHAIMER British Museum, Sloane 5218-52. Chalk of two colours, the background and part of the dress black, the rest brown. 37 x 27.6 cm. (14 1/2 x 10 7/8 in.). Paulus Hofhaimer (b. 1459, d. before 1539) became in 1496 Court organist to the Emperor Maximilian I, whom he often accompanied on his journeys. He resided otherwise at Innsbruck until he removed, after the Emperor's death, to Salzburg, where he was organist of the Cathedral. It is said, in a complementary poem published in his Harmoniae Poeticae, 1539, that his portrait was painted by Cranach. He appears, playing the organ, on one of Burgkmair's woodcuts (No. 22 in the 1796 edition) in the Triumphal Procession of Maximilian, and again on a woodcut by Hans Weiditz of Maximilian hearing Mass in his Court Chapel. Dürer probably drew him at the Diet of Augsburg in 1518. The identification of the portrait is due to Dr. F. Dörnhöffer. C. D."
