A Convivial Meeting

William Hogarth 1697 - 1764

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by William Hogarth. The drawing shows a group of figures seated around a round table to the left of the centre of the composition. In the table is a carafe, wine glasses and fruit and all of the men are engaged in talking, smoking or drinking. A male figure observes the scene from the right edge with his hat held to his chest and an anxious expression. At the left edge a female servant leans over to hear the instructions of one of the men at the table. Portrait paintings are lightly sketched in on the back wall of the room. Text in the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 35 WILLIAM HOGARTH (b. 1697; d. 1764) A CONVIVIAL MEETING Collection of A. A. de Pass, Esq. Formerly in the Jonathan Richardson, Junior, Collection. Pen and sepia, with indian ink wash. 19.2 x 31.8 cm. (7 1/2 x 12 1/2 in.). Members of a club sitting round a table at a tavern, smoking and drinking. One of the number gives an order to a maid who enters at the door. A man-servant, with a house key in his hand, stands at the other side. A drawing with less of vivacious vigour and insctinct for character than we expect from Hogarth. If not by him, it may be by his contemporary L. P. Boitard, whose style is often singularly close to that of the English master."
