Canaletto 1697 - 1768

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Canaletto. A small bridge is in the foreground of the drawing, leading over some water to a tall building on the right-hand side. A bird in a cage is sitting on the bridge in between two plant pots, and two people are leaning over the bridge at the other side. Some figures are to the left of the bridge, one of whom appears to be carrying a basket on their head. A number of buildings are visible behind the bridge. A large building with a semicircular window is dominant, with several smaller buildings to the front, and a building with a conical spire to the left. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 11 ANTONIO CANALE (CANALETTO) (b. 1697; d. 1768) ITALIAN VIEW Collection of Henry Oppenheimer Esq. From the Reveley, and Sir James Knowles collections. Pen and sepia, with washes of sepia and Indian ink. 29 x 20.5 cm. (11 3/8 x 8 in.). View of the west end and part of the nave of a large church, seen across a group of small buildings. In the foreground a little bridge over a canal leads to a tall house, which towers up at the right. The drawing is characteristic of the easy, mannered, but always masterly style of Canaletto's maturity."
