A Landsknecht

South School

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing from the South German School. The drawing is on a green background, with highlights picked out in white. It shows a man standing with his right arm in the air and his face raised upwards. His headwear has feathers sticking out of it, and he is carrying a spear. Foliage, buildings and clouds are sketched in the background. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 22 SOUTH GERMAN SCHOOL (1521) A LANDSKNECHT University College, London; from the Collection presented in 1872 by Mrs. George Grote. Pen and ink on a green prepared ground, heightened with white. Dated 1521. 20.5 x 15.2 cm. (8 1/16 x 6 in.). Probably a work of the Bavarian or 'Danube' school, rather than the Swiss, with which the subject and nature of the landscape might be thought to connect it. The drawing of the right leg is open to criticism, but the anonymous artist shows himself, on the whole, a capable master of his craft. C. D."
