Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Hubert François Gravelot. The drawing is of a woman handing a small child to a seated lady. The infant is wearing a long gown. The three are pictured in the interior of a grand room. A bust is mounted on the wall above them, and next to the seated woman is a table with writing equipment. The carpet is patterned and a long curtain hangs down to the left of the drawing, falling onto an ornate stool. This drawing is on the same sheet as 1933.450. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "Nos. 27, 28 HUBERT FRANÇOIS GRAVELOT (b. 1699; d. 1778) TWO ILLUSTRATIONS TO PAMELA 27. A gipsy telling the fortunes of Pamela and Mrs. Jewkes, while Nan, the maid, brings food for her. 28. Pamela's son, Billy, brought to her by the nurse. Collection of Captain E. G. Spencer Churchill, Northwick Park. Pen and ink, and sepia wash. (27) 13 x 7.8 cm. (5 1/8 x 3 1/8 in.); (28) 12.8 x 7.6 cm. (5 1/6 x 3 in.). Both drawings are indented for transfer, and were engraved in reverse by Gravelot for the 6th edition of Samuel Richardson's Pamela, 1742 (4 vols. 8VO). (27) Vol. iv, p. 372. Six other drawings for the series are in the British Museum, and one in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (for Vol. iv. p. 475). The book contains in all twenty-nine plates engraved by Gravelot, seventeen being original designs, the rest after F. Hayman. C. D."
