Summary

A group of men working in a forge. James Sharples was a blacksmith in Blackburn, self-taught artist and engraver. He painted The Forge depicting hisworkplace over a period of three years, completing it c.1849. He then taught himself engraving to produce this print of his painting over a period of approximately five years.
