Studies in Line

Conrad Atkinson 1940

Summary

Within this print there are ten small line drawings, set out on one sheet in two columns of five. Each drawing is created solely through fine, black lines against the white of the paper and therefore any shading is created through hatching. All of the drawings are different but they follow a similar format as they have a loosely rectangular frame that is then filled with different lines and forms. The interior detail to each drawing tends to be a series of curved lines and circular forms which are connected through the use of different lines and shading. Often they have smaller circles at points where multiple lines meet. As none of the lines are particularly straight and tend to be sketchy in places it is apparent that they are free-hand drawings. The two drawings at the bottom of each column are significantly smaller than the other eight drawings which are all roughly the same size.
