Woman Standing

Arthur Cyril Hilton 2 Jan 1897 - 14 Feb 1960

Summary

A freely sketched line drawing of a woman standing in the corner of a room, leaning her right shoulder against the wall; she is in profile to the left, with her left hand resting on her hip. She has long hair and wears a knee-length, belted, short-sleeved dress with flat shoes. There is very little background detail except for the suggestion of a room corner. Self-taught artist Arthur Cyril Hilton was born in Manchester in 1897 and lived in Chorlton-cum-Hardy. He served oversees in World War I and was wounded on the Somme in 1916. Between 1926-1932 he exhibited in Liverpool, the Manchester Athenaeum Graphic Club and at the Southport Spring Exhibition. He also had a solo exhibition at Salford Art Gallery. During the 1930s he was a member of the Society of Modern Painters and elected Chairman in c.1955. He worked for the Manchester Education Committee as a school registrar and as a librarian at the Committee's Office.
