Self-taught artist Arthur Cyril Hilton was born in Manchester in 1897 and lived in Chorlton-cum-Hardy. He served oversees in World War I and was wounded on the Somme in 1916. Between 1926-1932 he exhibited in Liverpool, the Manchester Athenaeum Graphic Club and at the Southport Spring Exhibition. He also had a solo exhibition at Salford Art Gallery. During the 1930s he was a member of the Society of Modern Painters and elected Chairman in c.1955. He worked for the Manchester Education Committee as a school registrar and as a librarian at the Committee's Office.
