Dante Meeting Beatrice

Dante Gabriel Rossetti 1828 - 1882

Summary

A vividly coloured drawing depicting the meeting of a man and woman in a woodland setting. On the right a man, dressed in a dark green tunic beneath a black cloak, moves towards a woman on the left, his hands brought up towards his face, his head covered with a black headdress. The woman who is the focus of his attention lifts a white headdress from her face. She is dressed in a vivid green mantle over a red dress, a laurel band on her head. She is framed on either side by female attendants, who stand behind her in bright blue gowns, holding golden lyres in their hands. All three woman have faint halos around their heads.
