Summary

Preparatory compositional study for 'Captive Andromache'. Architectural setting with visible perspective lines. Main groups of figures on left and right. A lone, sombrely draped, hooded figure is in the centre, separated from groups on either side by the physical distance betwen them. The lone figure has a water jug by her feet. There are female figures through out the image who hold jugs and on the right is a spring from which several women are collecting water.
