The King's Highway
Winifred Nicholson 1893 - 1981
Summary
Naive landscape of gently undulating hills and valleys seen from a high vantage point; running along the base of the valley below (and diagonally across the composition) is a road, the edges of which have been defined with a black outline in the same style as the boundaries of the fields that line the slopes of the valley. On the horizon are two rounded peaks linked by a saddle formation; covering the top of the left peak is a dramatic, dark shape; a second dark shape appears at the centre of the right edge of the composition, the outline of its form suggestive of the turrets of a castle or a dense pine forest. The work is inscribed 'Harock Head' and dated Aug. 1921 on the reverse.
