The Concrete Armada

Deanna Petherbridge CBE 1939

Summary

The Concrete Armada is a gigantic battle piece, drawn entirely in pen and ink and took eight months to complete. Menacing mechanistic symbols of destruction confront each other in a futuristic landscape, devoid of people but seething with human aggression. This large battle drawing is concerned with the horrific mechanisation of war, in which weapons can be seen in an unreal geometric landscape. It explores the coastal gun emplacements of Hitler's 'Atlantic Wall' on one side of the Channel during World War II and the naval sea-forts on stilts protecting Britain.
