Summary

Scene within city. In foreground on right, at the bottom of some wooden steps, a group of women wash sheets in the river. Behind them is the rounded end of a building with narrow windows,some of which are broken and boarded up. On left three men cross a small stone bridge over the river, one man carrying a barrel. In background a large elaborate building faces the viewer with more smaller buildings lining a street which extends out of view.
