Dutch Boats off Billingsgate, 1831

Thomas Miles Richardson Snr. 1784 - 1848

Summary

To the left there are three sailing boats, one with its sails at half mast. They appear to be docked. In the centregound there is a river with a bridge in the distance. Moving to the right a city skyline can be seen with the dome of St Paul's Cathedral and Billingsgate fish market on the far right hand side. Two Dutch style sailing boats can be seen on the right, the closest to us is heavily laden with casks and crates. A lady stands on the left of the boat leaning down towards two men in a small rowing boat which is laden with cargo. One man stands at the front of the boat whilst a second is seated behind him rowing with long oars.
