The Plague of London: The Decision of Faith

Frederic James Shields 1833 - 1911

Summary

Monochrome drawing of a man seated in the corner of a room at a desk in prayer, depicted in great detail. The figure is seen in three-quarter view to the left, a book laid open before him, with his left hand lifting the corner of a page in the book, the right hand raised with the palm open, his eyes closed and head tilted back. Also on the desk are a Bill of Mortality and a sheet headed with the symbol of the skull and cross-bones. The scene is characterised by dramatic contrasts of light and dark, in particular the face and raised hand of the figure seen against the shadowy wall of the room.
