Frederic James Shields 1833 - 1911

Summary

Rural landscape scene, on the brow of a hill, with the corpse in the foreground, laid near to a narrow grave. Two men stand at the far side of the grave, the left with a long staff, which he uses to manoeuvre the body into place; the right figure stands leaning on a spade with a dog and wicker basket by his side. In the background are the roof tops of a village and the spire of the church, seen against gently undulating hills.
