Study for 'Gaîté Montparnasse'

Walter Richard Sickert 1860 - 1942

Summary

Study of a music hall interior, squared up (grid lines) with yellow chalk. The view is seen as a reflection in a mirror, the frame of which can be seen across the bottom and right edges of the composition. In the lower section of the composition, the view is across the heads of the audience seated in the stalls with particular attention paid to the architectural structure of the underside of the circle and the columns supporting it; in the upper section of the composition is the curved wall of the circle seating and the faces of those in the front rows.
