The Cavalier

John Dawson Watson 1832 - 1892

Summary

A courtyard setting with a brick and wooden built archway. Under the archway is a bay horse, standing with its head facing away. On top of the horse is a soldier or cavalier wearing a red coat and white breeches. He has black knee length boots, a white belt and white gloves on. All ready in his saddle and stirrups he is turning around to the right, (steadying himself by putting his right hand on the horses back) towards a young woman who is standing behind him in the courtyard. He carries a sword and pack and wears a bicorne hat. The female figure is on the far right of the painting wearing a three quarter length brown skirt, small black shoes, a green apron and yellow bodice. Under her right arm she carries a large red pan and her left arm is bent with her hand on her hip. She is leaning casually against a lime washed wall with her legs crossed at the ankles. Her head with her dark hair tied up in a bun, is turned towards the soldier.
