A Young Artist
Paul Constant Soyer 1823 - 1903
Summary
A little girl sits on a low stool in front of an easel, concentrating hard on copying the portrait in front of her. She is neatly turned out in a blue dress and green pinafore, and a green ribbon holds back her glossy hair. A box of pastels and a glass of water are at her feet. Plaster casts of a hand and an arm hang from the wall beside her, implying that this may be the corner of an artist's studio. Paul Soyer, a pupil of Léon Cogniet, specialised in domestic genre scenes and portraits of children, both of which were fashionable genres in mid-19th century France. This portrait of youthful enthusiasm avoids being saccharine.
