Summary

White kid painted in watercolour in a full-leaf rural scene of a milkmaid leading a tethered cow and watching a seated man, reading with a dog beside him. They are close by a river and the man is possibly fishing. Bordered at the top and bottom by a painting edging, representing a fringe, in gold, black and silver. Leaf edging all round with a gold band. Reverse is unlined, but with a similar border and gold painted ribs. Sticks are finely pierced and carved ivory with three cartouches carved in low relief with Chinese figures and landscapes. Bordered with frames of mother of pearl cloute as are two small reserves between. The stick on the left has been removed (as presumably has a section of the leaf which is contemporary) so that the left hand cartouche is incomplete. Guards are carved ivory with silver pique work and have mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell panel inlays flanking two small male figures. Part of the Moorcroft donation and No. 558 in the Moorcroft Catalogue. Presented by donor's sister at Christmas 1965 and purchased in the King's Road, Chelsea.
