Breaking up the Encampment

John Gilbert 1817 - 1897

Summary

A scene of an attack on a gypsy encampment in a woodland clearing. In the foreground, a group of gypsy men, women and children on horseback and in carts flee attacking peasants. Beyond, to the left, more figures can be seen hastily packing up their belongings and saddling horses and mules. Behind the moving column, in the middle ground, there is a steep, orange coloured bank, on top of which is woodland. To the left of the scene, a background of distant rolling hills punctuated by woodland and a large river are set against a clouded sky.
