Summary

Seascape looking across the Bosphorus towards Constantinople (Istanbul). In the centre of the composition, a British warship is positioned in the water before the city's coast and the Dolmabahce Palace and Mosque, and to the right, a small sailing boat tilts upon the gently rolling sea. Constantinople stands upon a hillside; the white washed buildings lining the shore and the domes and minarets of the city's mosques are visible against the skyline. The sea reflects the colour of sky; its deep shades of blue broken with scattered white clouds.
