Mrs Meum Lindsell Stewart

Sir Jacob Epstein 1880 - 1959

Summary

Bust of a nude young woman emerging from a drapery effect base. She has thick wavy hair which is styled in a peak at the back of her head, with a heavy fringe. The sitter is described by Richard Buckle in 'Jacob Epstein', 1963, as a pretty blonde typist who married an officer during the First World War and then became one of Mr Cochran's Young Ladies. She was later the friend of Clifford Bax, the playwright. This was Epstein's first portrait of her.
