baking dish

baking dish

Summary

Deep rectangular press-moulded dish with curving sides and plain rim. Upper surface coated with dark red slip, almost black through lead glaze, decorated with thick trailed lines of white in a pattern of four groups of three parallel zig-zag lines running lengthways across interior. Decoration probably carried out on flat clay slab, before press-moulding, indicated by edges of pattern around rim, almost cut off by edge of dish. Plain unglazed rim edge and underside, blackened around sides.
