Holy Island Cathedral

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775 - 1851

Summary

The ruins of a religious building with three tiers can be seen in the foreground: an arched promenade on the ground level with horizontal stripes on the columns and decorative capitals above which the next two plainer tiers comprise of arched windows. Grass grows on the ground between the walls, covered with moss in some areas. There are fallen pieces on the ground. A figure stands beside a column in the centre background, provinding an idea of the dimensions of the ruins.
