The Avenue

Gwendolen Raverat 1885 - 1957

Summary

Along the left hand side of the landscape is a row of heavily leaved, dark trees which stretch into the distance to the centre of the composition. The trees draw the viewer's eye towards the rolling hills which can be seen in the distance receding towards the bright sky which fills over half the composition. Seen through the trees is a figure with a cart on the road moving towards the foreground. The foreground is comprised of a flat field stretching out to the right with long shadows falling across it from the trees in the left. In the centre of the field are two dark objects and in the distance to the right there are further dark shapes that appear to be hay bales. On the horizon there is also a tall building, only just discernible as it is set so far back in the distance. This is one of two impressions of this print. See 1928.394 b.
