Summary

Costume with influence from the 18th century with mock men's waistcoat fronts and dark green 'tailcoat'. Shot silk in emerald/black and emerald/yellow; plain dark green silk. Two piece. Lined with white plain weave silk. Bodice fronts of dark green silk, falling in loose folds from shoulders. Cream satin band embroidered with pink and green sequins, green stemstitch and pink french knots on lime green front extension, edged with deep ruffle of embroidered net. Three large buttons and metal and faceted clear glass beads lower edge. Front fastening. V shaped neck at front with crescent turndown collar, trimmed with stitching. Waistline covered with wide band of black silk satin held in folds, fastenign on left. Sleeve with turnback cuff of dark green faced lime, falling cuff of cream embroidered net. Separate skirt, lime green, fastening centre back with crossover. Fullness held in pleats. Waistband woven : "G. WORTH Paris" Label : "No 70378 Worth 7 Rue de la Paix 7 Paris Mme Claude Watney, Atelier Bolio (?), ". Ada Annie Nunn was born in 1868 and although from humble beginnings, married Sherman Martin, a wealthy American, in 1889. After his early death she remarried Claude Watney, heir to a brewery business, in 1895. They were both early motor car enthusiasts and a photograph by Lafayette of Ada, wearing Paquin, was published in The Car Illustrated in June 1902. (image).
