Summary

Public: Lidded jug in the form of a bear, buff stoneware with a brown salt-glaze, decorated with shredded clay simulating fur. Private: Jug in the form of a bear sitting upright on hind legs, constructed from thrown cylindrical bottle with recess above foot, flattened shoulder and tapered neck. Two modelled hind feet applied to front above base, with two applied straps at shoulder above, simulating forelegs with paws clasped to chest. Cover in the form of bear's head (fixed to jug), a thrown bowl with flattened base and prominent applied snout. Body and cup coated with coarse shredded clay grog simulating fur, reserving rims of cup and foot, eyes defined by rings of extra grog to either side of snout. The whole decorated with dark brown iron-rich colouring beneath a glossy salt-glaze.
