Summary

Claret silk formal day dress, figured with a floral design. Fitted bodice and bustle skirt. 3 parts. Front bodice; Stand collar. Fastens centre front with matching buttons and buttonholes. Fronts in 1 piece, 2 boned vertical darts each side ,extends to a deep ,weighted V point. Bodice back; 3 sections each side, all seams boned. Centre back extends below waist into 2 pleated and weighted 'tails' to cover bustle. Bodice lined in black cotton satine. Dress band at waist with makers name. Sleeves; Fitted and cut in 2 pieces with lace frill at wrist. Skirt; Front panel and 2 side panels of brocade, back panels in matching claret alpaca. Skirt pleated into waist with 2 sewn in steel hoops and tapes to form bustle. Front panels trimmed at hem with pleated flounce of claret twilled silk. Back panels trimmed with a deeper pleated frill of twilled silk. (garments would not be worn together as there is no proper back to the skirt) Overdress; Claret twilled silk. (A much altered garment, possibly incorporating a bodice worn with the above skirt.) Stand collar fastens centre front with fabric covered buttons. Fronts in 1 piece with 2 boned vertical darts, extends to a point. Back; In 8 pieces with all seams boned, back extends into 'tails' which have been chopped off. Cream machine lace frill down centre front and at collar and cuffs. Full length 'skirt' attached to the lower hem of the bodice, pleated at centre back waist. 2 flaps of brocade tacked on bodice at hip level to suggest pockets.
