The Lady Chapel, Church of St Pierre, Caen
Summary
Atmospheric view of the interior of the Lady Chapel, Church of St Pierre in Caen, France. Ornately carved columns lead towards a vaulted ceiling, dominating crowds of praying figures below. Much of the scene is shrouded in darkness, but for a bright light falling across the altar. Kneeling before the altar, atop a flight of stairs, the figure of a clergyman stands with an assistant by his side. A large painting hangs on the wall to the left of the altar, and at the foot of the stairs, behind a low barrier, groups of figures gather in prayer. The high stained glass windows cast light over the scene, contrasting with the darkened interior. private: Frame: Gilt plaster decoration; corner and centre scrolls with naturalistic Forget-me-not style flowers.
