Summary

Public: Tankard made of white earthenware transfer-printed in blac with the London to Liverpool mail train, beneath pearlware glaze. private: Cylindrical tankard with turned spreading foot and strap loop handle. Transfer-printed in underglaze black around sides with scene depicting the London to Liverpool mail train. Steam engine to right of handle, inscribed LIVERPOOL, pulling the mail truck, two passenger coaches inscribed VICTORIA and LONDON ROYAL MAIL LIVERPOOL, and a flat truck carrying passengers in a private carriage, behind it to right. Indistinct rural setting with flowers and trees in foreground, hazy hills in the distance. Deep diamond diaper border to rim, interrupted by four floral sprays and scrolls, band of diamond diaper to handle. Narrow border inside rim of diamond band and formalised sprigs and arrow heads. White earthenware body with blue-tinted pearlware glaze.
