Summary

Public: Baluster jug, cream coloured earthenware, transfer-printed overglaze in red with 'The Landlord's Caution' on one side, verse within medallion on the other. Private: Swollen baluster jug, with flared rim and foot, projecting sparrow beak lip and plain loop handle. Transfer-printed in overglaze red faded to pale brown, on side to left of handle, with puzzle entitled THE / LANDLORDS CAUTION, cautionary verse arranged in four columns within rectangular panel, to be read upwards from bottom right corner: 'The / Brewer / has / sent / his / Clerk / and / I / must / pay / my / score / and / if / I / trust / my / beer / What / Shall / I / Do / For / More'. Panel surrounded by two trailing fruiting grapevines tied by a ribbon below, verse title in narrow panel across the top interrupted by central trophy of tankard inscribed 'THE', two crossed pipes and five ears of corn. Side to right of handle printed with circular medallion containing verse 'A little Health, / A little Wealth, / A little House and Freedom: / And at the end, / A little Friend, / and little cause to need him.' embellished with scrolls. Floral and chain borders to medallion, scrolling leafy festoon suspended from central patera overhead. Cream coloured earthenware body with blue-tinted pearlware glaze, giving greenish body colour.
