Summary

Public: Swollen baluster jug, cream coloured earthenware body, transfer-printed in overglaze black on one side with a scene entitled 'Tom Truelove going to Sea' and on the other with a sailing ship flying an American flag. The jug was made in Staffordshire for the American market. Private: Swollen baluster jug, with flared rim and foot, projecting sparrow beak lip and plain loop handle. Transfer-printed in overglaze black on side to left of handle, with scene entitled 'TOM TRUELOVE GOING TO SEA' below young man and woman standing together in rural setting with cottage in background to right, moored ship in background to left. The woman stands to left weeping into her handkerchief, young man to right gesturing with right hand, a cane carried under his left arm. Side to right of handle printed with ship in full sail flying American flag, above cannon and two entwined flags. Side beneath lip printed with bird's nest containing three chicks, parent birds perched on flowering branches to left and right. Crudely painted plain black enamel bands to foot and rim. Pale cream coloured earthenware body, with slightly blue-tinted pearlware glaze.
