Summary

Flattened oval tea caddy with stepped foot, faceted corners and curved shoulder, with narrow cylindrical neck. Transfer-printed in overglaze red on one side, with 'Tea Party No.1', comprising lady and gentleman seated on garden bench before small tea table, gentleman stretching hand towards young black male servant carrying kettle to left, dog sitting at lady's feet to right, foliage in background. Opposite side printed with 'The Shepherd', shepherd boy seated against tree stump on grassy mound with crook in right hand, dog and three sheep in foreground to right, fence, trees and cottage in background. Shallow domed cover with flat rim and acorn finial. Cream coloured earthenware body, with yellowish glaze.

Earthenware canister with Tea Party transfer print 1765-70 Wedgwood, Sadler, Green and Sadler In the 18th century, the presence of an elegantly dressed black page boy would have been seen as symbolic of the couples’ high social status. Thomas Tylston Greg bequest 1923.877
