Summary

Public: Ovoid jug with square-angled handle, white earthenware, with applied relief decoration of Napoleon and John Bull fighting and a ship at sea, painted in brown, green, black, yellow ochre, yellow and cobalt blue beneath pearlware glaze. Private: Ovoid jug with rounded shoulder tapering to straight neck, inset lip and square-angled handle with relief-moulded acanthus detail. Applied relief scene to left of handle, comprising tall skinny figure of Napoleon to left, dressed in ochre and yellow jacket, blue breeches and black boots and hat, fighting with short stout figure of John Bull to right, in blue jacket, yellow waistcoat, ochre breeches and black shoes and hat. John Bull has drawn his sword as Napoleon's sword flies through the air behind him. Painted green patch of grass below inscribed 'Boney & John Bull' in brown. Applied relief ship at sea to right of handle, picked out in brown, ochre, blue and green. Brown painted leafy sprigs scattered across body between reliefs, brown band and looped husk border to rim, single brown bands inside rim and above foot, small brown details to handle. Blue pearlware glaze.
