Summary

Public: Ovoid jug with cylindrical neck and inset lip. White earthenware, transfer-printed in overglaze brown with portrait of Queen Caroline and commemorative verse, shoulder, neck and handle painted in metallic purple and copper lustre. Private: Ovoid jug tapering to foot, with cylindrical neck, inset lip and loop handle with outer spur at thumbrest. Side to left of handle printed in overglaze purple with half-length portrait of Queen Caroline wearing plumed hat, with inscription below reading 'GOD SAVE / QUEEN CAROLINE!'. Side to right of handle printed with floral cartouche, containing commemorative verse : 'Would you wish to know a Bright Star of the Morn, / That cheers a whole nation, all lost and forlorn? / 'Tis that Feminine Planet! O long may she shine / And Heaven protect her, our QUEEN CAROLINE'. Shoulder, neck, lip and upper handle all painted in thick metallic copper lustre above narrow moulded shoulder ridge, with metallic purple lustre leafy spray beneath lip and purple lustre borders to foot and inside rim.
