The Gathering Storm
Jacob Hendricus Maris 1837 - 1899
Summary
The long landscape format of this picture lends itself well to the subject of a gathering storm over open countryside. Pockets of sunshine remain, but most of the countryside is already in deep shadow cast by the rolling clouds. Jacob Maris trained at the fine arts academies in The Hague and Antwerp, and in the 1860s went to Paris. His subjects were typically Dutch landscapes and scenes of everyday life, painted in a naturalistic manner, reminiscent of the work of the Barbizon painters. He became one of the leading figures of the Hague school. The subject and brushwork suggest the 1880s; in this late period Maris rarely dated his work.
