St Francis at Devotion
Summary
Right side profile painting of an old gentleman who was a friend of the artist, represented in this work as Saint Francis; he is a bald-headed man wearing a brown robe gazing upward towards a crusifix mounted above a large bible, with hands clasped in prayer. The bible lies open, propped on a table with arched supports. The background of the painting is a deep black colour which contrasts with the face, neck and clasped hands of the figure which are illuminated to highlight their performance of devotion.
