Summary

Day suit with jacket and skirt in white cotton pique with black printed textured pattern, jacket with nipped in waist and stiffened peplum, narrow A-line skirt. Broad brimmed hat with matching cotton trim. Jacket: very low rounded neckline CF; lined; fronts fastening with three self-covered buttons and buttonholes; fronts each in two sections fitted to waist, side front sections shaped with darts and with diagonal (false) pocket flaps. Narrow underarm section each side; back in two sections; narrow sewn-on border all round edges; elbow length sleeves in two sections with wide turn-back cuff; large triangular scarf of emerald green cotton poplin sewn into neck and seamed down back of neck. Skirt: inside waistband fastening with hooks and eyes on left; zip fastening on left; front in one section, shaped each side with dart at waist; sides and back in 6 sections, very slightly flared. Label sewn centre back of jacket; printed rayon; designer's name: 'CREED / LONDON / MADE IN ENGLAND' Label sewn in skirt waistband; printed rayon; designer's name, date, model no and customer: CHARLES CREED Ltd. / LONDON / DATE 12-5-53 / Cotton Board' Hat - black straw plait with wide brim and low round crown; trimmed with made up bow and ties in matching black and white cotton. Labelled 'Vernier, London'. Commissioned by the Cotton Board. Shown at fashion parade, "This Year of Cotton" at the Hyde Park Hotel, London, 29 May 1953, and at Fashion Reception at the Grand Hotel, Stockholm, 27 August 1953, both organised by the Cotton Board.
