Salford Cross

John Ralston 1789 - 1833

Summary

Scene of people surrounding the Salford market cross going about their daily business. For example, in the foreground a well-to-do lady passes by with her child who holds an umbrella, a working man with a basket heads purposefully on his way, two children are teasing a dog, and a man in dark clothing is gesturing, as though telling a tale, to three women who wear bonnets and large shawls. The background to all this human life is a row of Tudor-style timber-framed houses of various designs. This is a reproduction on a much smaller scale of a lithograph made by J Ralston and G Harley in 1824 (see 1909.907). It appears to have been taken from a book.
