Richard Cobden Esq. M. P.
Frederick Christian Lewis Snr. 1779 - 1856
Summary
A portrait of Richard Cobden (1804-65) Member of Parliament and advocate of free trade. Cobden is shown here in middle age. He sits at a slight angle on a chair in front of a landscape background - sailing ships are crossing the water behind him. He wears an open coat with a waistcoat and neckcloth . The lettering below the print has been painted over to make it more visible. This might have been because it was displayed in the Horsfall Museum, Ancoats, Manchester, in the 1920s, prior to the museum being wired for electric lighting, and therefore display conditions would have been gloomy.
