Independent College, Manchester
Summary
A view of Lancashire Independent College, a theological college for training Congregationalist ministers which opened in Whalley Range, Manchester, in 1843. We see a large and elaborate gothic tower marking the centre of a long symmetrical building. On the ground floor are arches in a covered walkway, with two floors above regularly punctuated by windows. In the foreground people are walking on the wide paths before the college. In its later life the college was affiliated with Owens' College (later Manchester University). In the 1980s became the national training centre of the GMB Union, and in 2006 the building became the home of the British Muslim Heritage Centre. The engraving is in a rounded oblong shape, with its title in copperplate writing beneath it.
