Manchester Grammar School

Frederick Garnell

Summary

A view of Manchester Grammar School on Long Millgate, with the College Gates of Chetham's Hospital on the right. The School building, designed (1873-78) by Alfred Waterhouse, is the focus of the image. It is seen at an angle, so that the first-floor glazed iron bridge to the later extension building is visible. It is possibly the end of the school day, and boys carrying briefcases are leaving from the two school entrances. The backs of two motor cars can be seen on the street, and a porter's trolley with rolls of cloth is in the foreground. In the distance is the cathedral. The image is composed of bold, evenly black lines.
