Sir Francis Seymour Haden was a surgeon by profession with etching as his hobby. He went on to found the Royal Society of Painter Etchers and helped to popuarise the medium in England. Early in his printmaking experience and for a while, Haden worked closely with artist James Abbot McNeil Whistler who was his brother-in-law.
