Thirlmere, Cumberland

Abraham Pether 1756 - 1812

Summary

An idyllic view of Thirlmere lake in Cumbria. The moon is low in the sky above the mere and reflected in the water below, and the surrounding hillsides are in darkness. Two shepherds and a dog are just distinguishable in the bottom foreground to the right. The elusive landscape artist Abraham Pether specialised in moonlit scenes earning him the nickname 'Moonlight Pether'.
