Murrough O'Brien, 1st Earl of Inchiquin around 1660 - 70 John Michael Wright 1625 - 1700 Oil on canvas Inchiquin (1617/18 - 1674) was an Irish Protestant Leader who managed to fight on both sides in the Civil War. A soldier all his life, he showed no mercy to his enemies. This portrait was probably painted at the end of his career on one of his frequent visits to the court of Queen Henrietta Maria in London. Wright became a prominent English portraitist after the restoration of the monarchy. His work had a freshness and naturalism in comparison to the opulence of Lely. The work is in a contemporary Sunderland frame, named after the 2nd Earl who used them at Althorp. Sir Thomas Barlow gift 1945.255
