Norfolk Smallholding
Walter James Steggles 15/08/1908 - 05/03/1997
Summary
View across a Norfolk smallholding, towards broad flat plains in the distance, featuring a pathway in the foreground to the left with a small shed built on a slope to the right, with more farm buildings to the left partially obscured by a pair of tall bent trees at the side of the path. The artist had depicted the landscape using planes of relatively flat colour, communicating a fairly flat image to the viewer. The paint handling could loosely be described as impressionistic through its bold use of colour and occasional use of mottled surface texture, especially in the sections of grass in the foreground. A serene painting of Norfolk which reflects on the landscape in a distinctly modern style.
