Seed Time
John Frederick Herring Sr. 1795 - 1865
Summary
A view of fields on high ground being ploughed in the spring. In the centre a plough is being pulled by four horses in single file, away from the viewer, with a man following behind holding the plough. To the right of the group another four horses follow slightly behind, harnessed in twos, pulling a roller which flattens the ploughed earth. A man stands at the front of the second group, a whip resting on his shoulder. In the middle ground beyond, more horses make their way across the field in the opposite direction, with a man in between the groups scattering seed from a tray. Two dogs sit by a pile of coats and lunch baskets in the foreground. Rolling hills can be seen in the background, with several buildings visible out to the left.
