Performers

Malcolm Hughes 1920 - 1997

Summary

Surreal, slightly sinister portrayal of two performers, both in top hat and tails, performing with awkward gestures. Foremost performer on right stands with one arm raised over his head, behind him the second performer raises his top hat. Shadowy suburban setting, possibly a stage set, with small house in immediate background, horizon of roof tops visible in hazy distance. Small boy in shorts and braces stands on far left looking towards the distant rooftops. Malcolm Hughes was born in Manchester and studied at the Regional College of Art. From the 1960s he abandoned this fifties style modern figuration to focus on Constructivism. He was the husband of artist Jean Spencer.
